I was asked in private messages by a couple of forum members to post my impressions of a Miura Kindo 1.8 that I was fortunate enough to have come my way back in early September.
Now that I have had some time with it...here goes.
Disclaimer, I am an amateur, I have been playing Shakuhachi since early 2010, I play almost every day, and take lessons from Michael Chikuzen Gould.
I love this flute!
It is most likely an early flute from the maker, perhaps pre-1915, or earlier, this is the opinion of the three of us who have played it. We think this because it is a bit of a wild horse, with some very pronounced overtones that can be a bit difficult to control, especially at full volume. It has somewhat of an old flute tuning, but the pitch is closer than many older instruments. It is just not as refined as his newer flutes ( post 1930 or so ).
It has tamogo shaped bore that is very large, so it can play really loud and has wonderful dynamic range, plays very softly also. It is not as nimble or pitch perfect as the Kono Gyokusui shakuhachi that was my go to flute for over 5 years. So, not as good for ensemble music, but wow what a great honkyoku flute!
The variety of tone ( timbre ) and the dynamics are such that one can get a beautiful and very expressive sound from it. It really sings.
I look forward to learning it for many years to come, and along with my Ranpo 2.4 I am pretty sure I will not find anything I will like better.
