I bought this flute on the advice of my teacher Michael Chikuzen Gould about 6 years ago. It is a narrowish bore flute and would be very suitable for a person of smaller stature than I, but it sounded so good that he really hoped I would adapt to it. Some measurements: utaguchi is about 11mm wide corner to corner, from utaguchi to bottom of opening is about 22mm and width of opening is 22mm. Utaguchi is about 5mm deep. Holes are smallish and it is of average weight.
If I remember correctly, Michael told me that Taniguchi-san had or has a close relationship with Gyokusui family and often bought from them or sent his students there. Michael also spent a lot of time at the Gyokusui house, and has played over 300 of their shakuhachi. When Taniguchi played this flute, he bought it right away without any hesitation, Michael has told me that he feels it was one of the top 10 flutes that he played by either Gyokusui I or II.
Pitch is about as close as one can get, and it has a beautiful strong core without being brash or harsh. Nice dynamic range, and very nimble and fast. Would be a really great ensemble flute.
So, why am I selling it? I have to admit that I struggled with this flute, I am 6'2" and 240 pounds, and I jsut found it to be to delicate for me to adapt to it. I managed to find a Miura Kindo flute through Michael that is amazing and has a nice large bore, big holes, etc. and fits me much better. It is a testament to the Gyokusui flute that I worked with it for 5 1/2 years and even kept it for a few months just to make sure.
so I need the money to pay for the Kindo, and I paid a lot for this flute -- $6000 ( most Gyokusui flutes sell for $2500 to $3500 ). I am asking $6650 on ebay, which would almost get me to break even, I will sell direct to a forum member for $5500 or offer. Thanks for the bandwidth, Mark
