KSK Europe Scholarships July 2017 - June 2020
1. Introduction
KSK Europe is pleased to announce an annual scholarship in the periods July 2017 - June 2018, July 2018 - June 2019, and July 2019 - June 2020, to assist advanced shakuhachi students in Europe with a KSK affinity to undertake a short period of study in Japan.
2. Basic information about the scholarship
- the amount of the scholarship in each of the listed periods will be a maximum of €4000, to assist towards teaching fees and accommodation and living costs in Japan.
- the scholarship will be offered to a different student each year.
- the scholarship will be for a maximum period of 90 days in Japan (ie the duration of a tourist visa.) By special arrangement and with proof of suitable visa, a longer period may be considered (without, however, any increase in level of funding from KSK Europe).
- studies in Japan are to be made with a senior KSK teacher in Japan; the European KSK committee must approve this teacher in advance.
3. Preliminary conditions to be fulfilled by applicants
Applicants must:
- have been a resident in an EU country, UK, or Switzerland for at least one year at the time of application, and remain so until their departure for Japan.
- declare their intention to reside in an EU country, UK or Switzerland for at least 1 year after their return from Japan.
- demonstrate a nearness to KSK – substantial work (even if not exclusive) with a KSK teacher in Europe, and a substantial grounding in and skill with KSK repertoire.
- demonstrate a prior record of support for shakuhachi activities beyond their own in Europe (e.g. through support and volunteer work for events or organisation of the European Shakuhachi Society).
- declare a willingness to work closely with KSK Europe and ESS upon their return from Japan (e.g. in helping to organise future events of ESS and KSK Europe promoting the shakuhachi in Europe).
- except in case of explicit approval by the jury, applicants should not already possess a menjō from any school or teacher. (Under extraordinary circumstances, applicants with a menjō may be considered.)
4. Initial application process
To apply, applicants must submit (in writing, by e-mail):
- full contact details (name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, Skype/FaceTime contact details).
- a written proposal and programme indicating time frame and financial plan for the period in Japan.
- a letter (in English or Japanese) from the proposed teacher in Japan, indicating his/her agreement to the programme.
- a letter of recommendation from their current teacher in Europe
- recordings of their playing made under live or studio-live conditions (ie without editing), with a total of at least three and at most six pieces covering the following different genres: honkyoku (KSK repertoire), sankyoku, and contemporary (including recent compositions or improvisation, including their own pieces). The submitted recordings must represent each of these genres.
- an accompanying, written statement addressing all the conditions mentioned above in Section 1. This statement must also certify that the recordings are the applicant's own playing and are unedited.
5. Time frame and address for initial applications for July 2017 - June 2018
- initial applications are to be made by 31.01.2017 by e-mail (scans of written documents and .mp3-files as attachments) sent to

6. Assessment and decision-making process
- the applications received by e-mail on or before 31.01.2017 will be assessed by a jury consisting of senior KSK Europe teachers Horacio Curti, Jim Franklin and Véronique Piron and KSK Japan teacher Kakizakai Kaoru. Late applications cannot be considered.
- the jury will create a shortlist of applicants on the basis of the e-mail submissions by 28.02.2017.
- shortlisted applicants will be invited to a Skype/FaceTime interview in the week 07.03 - 13.03.2017.
- the successful applicant will be advised by 31.03.2017. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised by 07.04.2017.
- the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship in a specific year, if the jury members cannot reach majority agreement on a suitable applicant.
- the decision of the jury is final, and is not open to question or legal challenge by applicants.
7. Successful applicant's responsibilities, on his/her return from Japan
As part of the initial written application, applicants must:
- declare their intention to reside in an EU Country, UK or Switzerland for at least 1 year after their return from Japan.
- declare in advance a willingness to work closely with KSK Europe and ESS upon their return from Japan (e.g. in helping to organise future events of ESS and KSK Europe promoting the shakuhachi in Europe).
The successful applicant must:
- within 8 weeks of his/her return from Japan, submit a written report on his/her stay in Japan, indicating what was achieved, and how the proposed programme was realized.
- within 8 weeks of his/her return from Japan, submit a written statement (in English or Japanese) by his/her KSK teacher in Japan, indicating that the proposed programme was in fact undertaken and (within reason) successfully completed in accordance with the initial proposal.
- support ESS and KSK Europe activities in at least the year following his/her return, through organisational work and volunteer work at events such as KSK Europe workshops, concerts, ESS Summer Schools etc.
8. Legal exclusions
Failure to comply with the above conditions will result in rejection of an application.
Furthermore, applicants must observe the following legal restrictions and consequences:
- Evidence of any falsification or lack of truthfulness in an application will constitute grounds for immediate rejection of that application and exclusion of the applicant from all future rounds of application. Should a scholarship have already been granted to a successful applicant when any falsification on his/her part is exposed or discovered, this will constitute legal grounds for KSK Europe to demand immediate repayment of the scholarship.
- Failure on the part of the successful applicant to submit a written report and a statement of completion by his/her Japanese teacher within 8 weeks after his/her return from Japan will constitute legal grounds for KSK Europe to demand immediate repayment of the scholarship.
- Failure of the successful applicant to comply with the European residency requirements listed above, and with the declaration of intention to return to Europe after the period in Japan, will constitute legal grounds for KSK Europe to demand immediate repayment of the scholarship.
- Failure of the successful applicant to work closely in support of KSK Europe and ESS during at least the year after his/her return to Europe will constitute legal grounds for KSK Europe to demand immediate repayment of the scholarship.
9. Conclusion
Through this scholarship, KSK Europe looks forward to contributing to the development of and pursuit of excellence in shakuhachi performance in Europe.
