Hello to everyone,
My name is Federico, I live in northern Italy (Bergamo province) and I am a so called "japanophile". Since my youth I was fascinated by Japan and its history, this led me to practice martial arts from judo to currently kendo. As well I like Japanese cousine and literature, i am a Japanese language student and I recently bought a shakuhachi because I always loved music and I like its sound.
I hope to learn how to play this fascinating instrument with all the precious advices in this forum.

this flute has gone through long restoration process at my workshop during the last 2 years, and is now ready to be played.
it is a very easy and strong sounding flute, that would be an excellent instrument to study shakuhachi with.
it is endorsed and demonstrated in the video below by Joseph Pepe Danza.
price is 595usd or best offer.
flute specifications:
1.8 length pitched in D with a=440hz.
MUMEI (no maker signature).
wight: 372g
authentic vintage kinko ryu Japanese shakuhachi.
new water buffalo horn kinko utaguchi inlay.
joint and top half are binded with thicker old style inlay rattan bindings.
the flute is at least 50 years old (judging by the color of the bamboo).
natural urushi finish on the joint and bore.
2 cracks at the top half were bound.
utaguchi mouthpiece was replaced.
flute finger holes re tuned.
root end reshaped, sanded and painted with a thin layer of urushi.
joint re fitted and painted with black urushi.
some urushi repairs inside the bore and finger holes.

Greetings folk,
Gerd Winkler has me trying out one of his flutes, the hiccup is that it has a wide bore, which seems to slip out of position on my chin as I attempt to get a good embouchure. I can measure the diameter when I return home but Gerd's flute is wider than my 2.6.
I was wondering if there was a knack/trick/magic to settling in with a flute with a wide bore such as this ? Or do I accept the concept that the physical dimensions of my face will not allow me to ever play this flute ?
Be well.

Greetings,
Browsing the forum I noticed a Shakuhachi with the word Mumei attached, is this the name of a maker or is it another term describing a Shakuhachi or a particular style of flute ?
Be well.

Brief project outline
I have build my first synthesizer in the late 70’s. And I am playing Shakuhachi for seven years now. Time to bring both worlds together. Here we go.
The aim of this project is to provide shakuhachi players with the means to control an analogue synthesizer simultaneously with playing the shakuhachi, without affecting the playability of the flute.
So far it consists of three main modules: the pitch-to-voltage converter, the envelope follower and the “E-Shak”. The pitch-to-voltage converter derives a voltage from the pitch played on the shakuhachi. This is used primarily to control the pitch of the VCO (which is the initial generator of waves in the synthesizer). The envelope follower provides a voltage which follows the volume of the shakuhachi, together with gate and trigger signals. These are used mainly in conjunction with the synthesizer’s VCA (which is responsible for the dynamics of the synthesizer’s signal). The “E-Shak” is an exoskeleton attached to the shakuhachi with crepe tape. It is equipped with an accelerometer with three axes and with three switches. This module provides three control voltages according to the movement of the shakuhachi, and three additional on/off switches. The usage is only limited by the player’s imagination.
In the block diagram you can see the basic structure of the project. The microphone signal goes to the “Shak 2 Pulse” converter and the envelope follower (ENV). The Shak 2 Pulse converter is a band pass filter followed by a zero crossing detection with adjustable threshold. The output is a pulse train with the same frequency (pitch). This pulse train is converted to a voltage according to the pitch. The output voltage is available in V/Hz and V/Oct format. The envelope follower generates the gate (+5V), the trigger (+5V/20ms) and a voltage following the amplitude of the microphone signal.
The “E-Shak” is an exoskeleton equipped with a three axis accelerometer and three touch sensitive switches. With the interface you can adjust the gain and the inclination of the accelerometer signal. It provides three gate signal (+5V) as well.

Greetings! My name is Ignacio and I'm from Murcia (Spain). I bought my first shakuhachi to a local luthier called Ionut Buruian in Dec 2016 but, until know, I could't start practicing seriously.
It's a Madake bamboo flute built in 1.9ft, so it's C tuned. Everything I've found it's for 1.8 in D, so I don't know exactly how to start and I will be grateful with any advice (I'm learning by ear 'Trail of the Angels', but in C tune, so it's not so sweet as the original).
This is my darling <3
I hope I can be as active as I would like! Aaaaand, excuse my poor English
Kind regards!

We are al saddened to hear that Ronnie Nyogetsu Reishin Seldin passed away on the 30th May 2017.
Rest in peace, Ronnie!
Ronnie's contribution to the shakuhachi world outside Japan was immense! He taught thousands of students in the US.
He will be greatly missed.
On behalf of the ESS,
