Help with Hanko ...

Hi All,

First time poster here - joined a few months ago and have been lurking in the search engine on and off for a while. I'm a long time musician and basically a beginner on shakuhachi.

I have picked up a few flutes recently and surprised myself by actually being able to tell the difference between their playing characteristics (to a very small extent). I think it's actually helping my playing to test them out - geting into the third octave now! Anyway just wondered if anyone could shed some light on the various hanko. I think I've identified one as Takehura but the rest are a mystery to me.

Two of the flutes have two markings.

Here's one flute in any case:

Hello again fellow bamboo breathers. In my own way as a Professional Woodwind Wizard since 1989, I am still forging ahead with creating evolutionary solo shakuhachi and Taimu repertoire. All jinashi but shhh...don't tell anybody (!) actually, do tell anybody. It's a tired trope in these circles but, there are still untrue rumors about our naked bamboo out there in some places...the ear and the heart know best, is what I have come to discover, so I follow my nose and do as my breath instructs me to. See and know directly for yourself, below and above the analytical mind.

I would love to have some views and support from my bamboo brothers & sisters, just visit and if you like it contribute/share. Hope to see many of you in London next year, eh? Thanks to many of you who supported Holy Flute, Shakuhachi Unleashed Volume I, and for Joe Browning's illuminating and erudite review in the ESS Journal.

My new Mirua Kindo shakuhachi — a report

$

Hello everyone,
I was asked in private messages by a couple of forum members to post my impressions of a Miura Kindo 1.8 that I was fortunate enough to have come my way back in early September.
Now that I have had some time with it...here goes.
Disclaimer, I am an amateur, I have been playing Shakuhachi since early 2010, I play almost every day, and take lessons from Michael Chikuzen Gould.
I love this flute!
It is most likely an early flute from the maker, perhaps pre-1915, or earlier, this is the opinion of the three of us who have played it. We think this because it is a bit of a wild horse, with some very pronounced overtones that can be a bit difficult to control, especially at full volume. It has somewhat of an old flute tuning, but the pitch is closer than many older instruments. It is just not as refined as his newer flutes ( post 1930 or so ).
It has tamogo shaped bore that is very large, so it can play really loud and has wonderful dynamic range, plays very softly also. It is not as nimble or pitch perfect as the Kono Gyokusui shakuhachi that was my go to flute for over 5 years. So, not as good for ensemble music, but wow what a great honkyoku flute!
The variety of tone ( timbre ) and the dynamics are such that one can get a beautiful and very expressive sound from it. It really sings.
I look forward to learning it for many years to come, and along with my Ranpo 2.4 I am pretty sure I will not find anything I will like better.
Respond with questions if you wish and I will try to answer as best I can.
Mark

Kono Gyokusui 1.8 for sale, from Taniguchi Yoshinobu — beautiful bamboo, fantastic player, ex. Michael Chikuzen Gould

I am going to post this on ebay soon ( my eBay user name is Oceanica1 ) and I thought I would give the forum first crack at it. The images will be on eBay as well as the following description. Please message me through eBay ( you can use one of my other listings ) or contact me at wdc@wdc.omhcoxmail.com to get more information, etc. I do not check this forum much, so if you pm me through the forum, it might take a while for me to get back with you.

I bought this flute on the advice of my teacher Michael Chikuzen Gould about 6 years ago. It is a narrowish bore flute and would be very suitable for a person of smaller stature than I, but it sounded so good that he really hoped I would adapt to it. Some measurements: utaguchi is about 11mm wide corner to corner, from utaguchi to bottom of opening is about 22mm and width of opening is 22mm. Utaguchi is about 5mm deep. Holes are smallish and it is of average weight.

If I remember correctly, Michael told me that Taniguchi-san had or has a close relationship with Gyokusui family and often bought from them or sent his students there. Michael also spent a lot of time at the Gyokusui house, and has played over 300 of their shakuhachi. When Taniguchi played this flute, he bought it right away without any hesitation, Michael has told me that he feels it was one of the top 10 flutes that he played by either Gyokusui I or II.

Pitch is about as close as one can get, and it has a beautiful strong core without being brash or harsh. Nice dynamic range, and very nimble and fast. Would be a really great ensemble flute.

So, why am I selling it? I have to admit that I struggled with this flute, I am 6'2" and 240 pounds, and I jsut found it to be to delicate for me to adapt to it. I managed to find a Miura Kindo flute through Michael that is amazing and has a nice large bore, big holes, etc. and fits me much better. It is a testament to the Gyokusui flute that I worked with it for 5 1/2 years and even kept it for a few months just to make sure.

so I need the money to pay for the Kindo, and I paid a lot for this flute -- $6000 ( most Gyokusui flutes sell for $2500 to $3500 ). I am asking $6650 on ebay, which would almost get me to break even, I will sell direct to a forum member for $5500 or offer. Thanks for the bandwidth, Mark

Jem Klein - HoSetsu Professional 1.8 Black Bamboo Red Utaguc

Great flute for a student’s formative years or as a back up flute for professional level. I bought this flute while I was between 1.8s. It is great for travel, smaller hands, being light and having a slim profile. It has a more subdued voice but with a strong core sound- great for a jiari sound in smaller space or those with more sensitive ears. All techniques are functional. Asking $1,250 (near original price- I have had this flute for about a year).

On ebay as well, with pictures, or on my site.

1.8s: Gyokusui, Taniguchi, HoSetsu, & Vintage 2.0

I have three great 1.8 jiari flutes & a wonderful vintage pre-war 2.0 for sale - all excellent flutes for students and professionals alike...

Gyokusui 1.8 Jiari. This wonderful shakuhachi is great performer with rich texture and full volume. I believe this to be second generation Gyokusui. Recently repaired by Ken Lacosse, purchased from Jeff Cairn in 2009. A great classical shakuhachi with a wide range of moods available to the performer, including modern and classical repertoire. This flute’s weight is 325 grams.

Taniguchi. Select 1.8 This was my main 1.8 for many years- I selected it out of a batch of five different flutes that Michael Chikuzen Gould received from Taniguchi Yoshinobu for his students (I had first choice at the time). The flute was recently repaired by Ken Lacosse. The bamboo has an unusual oblong shape that created a wide look from the front and a slim profile – the bore is normally shaped. The flute is a unique player with dense core sound and excellent “cry” in kan. Cracks at root stabilized before I purchased in 2010. Cracks up front repaired recently with surface bindings. Professional grade flute with an great wabisabi look and feel. Its weight is 435 grams. Sound: : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuqk6MDYl9g&t=86s

Jem Klein (HoSetsu). 1.8 professional level shakuhachi. Great flute for a student’s formative years or as a back up flute for professional level. I bought this flute while I was between 1.8s. Great for travel, smaller hands. It has a more subdued voice but with a strong core sound- great for a jiari sound in smaller space or those with more sensitive ears. All techniques are functional. Asking $1,250 (near original price- I have had this flute for about a year). The flute’s weight is 285 grams.

Kinko Pre-War 2.0 Shakuhachi. “Shingetsu”. Excellent Kinko flute & old world sound. PRICE REDUCED $2,750. Purchased fromPeter Hill via Michael Chikuzen Gould about 7 years ago. Here are links to a couple of no-frills videos of me test driving the 2.0's potential. I think Kinko players would find a happier home in the flute than I may have… Test drive #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGzIBajOgys . Test drive #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUwwHBBnHUo

Visit my website for pictures, message or email for inquiries.

Thank you,
Michael

Hi everybody,

My name is John, I’m an expat in Japan.
Starting with a Shakuhachi Yuu and enjoying it.
I’m trying on my own as there are no teachers around here that I can find so far.
My hobby is hiking to remote areas and playing the shakuhachi at old ruins.

The forum is rather quiet.
Hope all is well.
